Sport for all in the Indian community report

Alan Laud has recently submitted a report called “Sport For All In The Indian Community”.  Alan works for the Ipswich Borough Council, Sports Development Unit. The report demonstrates participation by men and women from the Indian community in Ipswich, Suffolk. Alan has identified the different sports activity interests from the Indian Community, and keeping a close consultation with the group, to ensure that the project is successful in encouraging more people from the Indian Community to take part in sports activities. There is good evidence that this project is working well and that the community itself is taking a good lead to make this a success.

Be Active, Stay Healthy, Have Fun!

Living an active lifestyle can bring you physical, emotional and social benefits! Taking part in regular physical activity can help improve and maintain your fitness and health, enhance your mood, and introduce you to new friends. It can help you remain strong, mobile and independent. Perhaps most importantly, keeping active can reduce your risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, obesity and stroke. It’s essential that you live an active life, and it’s easier to do than you might think.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough has a new organisation called LIVING SPORT, which aims to get more and more people living active, healthy lifestyles. Their message to everybody comes all the way from Government: ‘to stay fit and healthy, adults should try to get 30 minutes of physical activity on at least five days per week’. And don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you have to go out running at the crack of dawn or take part in your local rugby club’s next match (unless you want to!). All you need to do is some sort of activity which increases your heart rate or makes you breath that little bit quicker! You can even break down the 30 minutes into smaller chunks and add them up during the day – such as 2 lots of 15 minutes, or 3 lots of 10 minutes. Try to keep a mental tally or diary of how much activity you do each day; you’ll be surprised at the difference it could make.

Think about the little changes you could make to your lifestyle to make it more active: could you meet friends for a walk in the park instead of a drink in the café? Could you cycle to the shops instead of getting the bus? And could you join a dance or sports club on those Thursday evenings when you normally stay in? You never need an excuse to get up and be active – it’s good for you!

We Want More Members!

Living Sport are appealing to people and organisations representing black and minority ethnic groups, to bolster our membership. We currently have over 400 members who have joined us towards our aim of increasing participation in sport and physical activity. However, very few (only 4%) are from a black or minority ethnic group, and we want to do something about that. For us to be able to represent the sporting community through our work, we need to hear from everybody that makes up that community. If you are interested in local sport and want to have your say, if you agree that physical activity is crucial in keeping people healthy, and if you want to keep your finger on the pulse of everything that is happening with sport and physical activity in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, then you should join Living Sport today. Membership is free, and very simple. For details, visit www.livingsport.co.uk, email info@livingsport.co.uk, or phone 01487 841559.
