    BECON - Black Ethnic Minority Community Organisations' Network

    BECON is the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) voluntary and community organisations network for the North East.

    Committed volunteers had been working on the project for the first 3 years, then a successful bid was submitted to the Active Community Unit in the Home Office in October 2000 to support the development of the network.

    BECON (Black and Ethnic Minority Community Organisations’ Network) is committed to:

    • · Challenging oppression and the exclusion of black people;
    • · Promoting, supporting and providing information and training opportunities to the BME voluntary and community sector in the North East;
    • · Facilitating BME groups to network, support each other, share experiences and resources, and influence decision makers.
  • A part-time, fixed term outreach team has been working on identifying BME voluntary and community groups. The workers are promoting the benefits of networking at a regional level, as well as the opportunities that free membership of BECON could provide. Such opportunities include regular updates of information and influencing policy makers with a strong collective voice. In addition, members will be able to circulate information about their project to other members of the network and potential external funding partners and attend events that promote the interests of BME groups.

    Voice East Midlands

    Voice East Midlands is a new and exciting addition to the regional framework of the East Midlands. It was originally formed in May 1999, with the encouragement and support of the Home Office, to enable the East Midlands Black & Minority Ethnic (BME) Voluntary and Community Sector to influence the regional agenda for the benefit of BME organisations and communities.

    The organisation was formally launched in January 2000, with the support of over 150 BME Voluntary and Community Organisations in the East Midlands. By January 2001 it had appointed a Chief Executive. The Chairperson of Voice East Midlands is Mr Len Shillingford.

    Our strategic objectives are:

    • To unlock funding for the BME Voluntary Sector at a regional level
    • To increase the effectiveness of the BME Voluntary Sector through capacity building support.
    • To be an informed voice on behalf of the BME Voluntary Sector and promote its interests at a regional level.

    BEST (Black & Ethnic Minority Support Team)

    The BEST way to promote inclusion and involvement.

    A mass of research exists that substantiates the every day experience of many Black Minority Ethnic individuals and communities.

    This shows they have to contend with additional barriers when it comes to participating in social and economic activities. It is as true in Wales as it is in other parts of the United Kingdom.

    In response to these issues, four of the key organisations in the voluntary/community sector have joined together to work in partnership. The partnership - called BEST (Black minority Ethnic Support Team) - is represented by the All Wales Ethnic Minority Association (AWEMA), Black Voluntary Sector Network Wales (BVSNW), Minority Ethnic Women?s Network (MEWN Cymru) and the Scarman Trust.

    BEST has been formed with the aim of providing support to Black Minority Ethnic communities and organisations within the scope of the Communities First Programme. Funded by the Welsh Assembly, the whole ethos of BEST is to work in partnership to enable BME communities to develop the skills and resources they need to make meaningful and sustained change in their lives
